When it comes to proper and truly effective office design, I am a firm believer that there is no substitute for the cultivated opinion of the industry experts that have polished their craft over years of experience in the industry. Having said that however, there is no reason you can’t think ahead and start streamlining your plans ahead of their arrival. One of the easiest ways to do this is to make use of the countless apps, software and other technologies now available which help you to realise your ideal space in digital form, allowing the design team to come in with a clear idea of your needs and expectations, thereby refining the entire process.

There are a myriad of tools which can help in this endeavour, perhaps the most notable being the plethora of space-specific analytics software such as Microsoft’s Workplace Analytics. These tools help answer important questions such as, ‘Which employees are most often present in the office and therefore make consistent use of their workspaces?’, ‘Are there heavily underused spaces that could serve a more useful purpose?’, and ‘Which teams interact on a regular basis and should therefore be situated side-by-side?’ among others. This data allows you to more easily craft an environment that plays to the strengths and requirements of the workforce, boosting happiness and productivity as a result.

There are also platforms out there that, while not inherently designed for the purpose of aiding in office design, manage to do so regardless due to their highly visual and ‘artsy’ nature. These platforms include the likes of Instagram and, perhaps more applicably, Pinterest, where design inspiration is never too many clicks away.

From there you can even take a little time to begin drawing up a basic floor plan; while this may not be by any means exact it will be useful to the design team when it comes to creating an environment that fulfils your requirements, and there are a wide variety of free and simple tools which can aid you in this endeavour. Tools such as SmartDraw or Microsoft Office Visio are often praised for their ease of use and comparative accuracy, and could be well worth investing a little of your time into.

Don’t get too hung up on the specifics here however, after all that’s what the experts are for. However by making use of some of the aforementioned software you can enhance not only the resultant space created, but also the efficiency with which the fit-out is completed.
