Employee happiness and wellbeing have steadily and rightfully risen to the forefront of the office design debate, with companies around the world beginning to incorporate features into their working environments that may not fit the ‘traditional’ office setting, yet offer value to the workforce in their own way. Perhaps the best recognised certification one can receive to prove a company’s commitment to such practices is the WELL Building Standard, held up by many and indeed described by the International WELL Building Institute themselves as the leading tool for advancing health and wellbeing in buildings globally.

While many companies strive for the much-valued certification, the WELL Building Institute maintains high standards and so meeting them is not always an easy task. With this in mind the BCCI Construction Company are likely delighted, as they recently announced the completion of their brand new HQ office which stands as the first WELL v1 certified office project in San Francisco.

The new headquarters, which was designed and constructed by BCCI Construction Company themselves to support project collaboration and interaction from the ground up, whilst also incorporating quiet spaces for focused work , dedicated phone rooms, a wellness room, lounge area, and even a patio. All of this has been designed to emphasise WELL’s vital concepts of air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind within the workplace.

The office space also includes additions such as sit-stand desks, ergonomic chairs, on-site bicycle parking, and filtered water stations. Local organic fruits and vegetables are provided twice weekly to ensure nutritious foods are regularly available, while the lack interior office walls fills the space with natural light. The company also took care to use only materials and furnishing with low-emitting VOCs to ensure a healthy supply of clean air.

The building and fit-out team also included Partner Engineering and Science as the structural engineer, and Amit Wadhwa & Associates as the MEP engineer, both of whom worked alongside BCCI on the project.
