When employees look for a job, while the company and job description are obviously important, salary is a key factor which can draw someone in or drive them away. However, if we look at research from recruitment specialists Robert Half UK, it seems money isn’t such a leading factor in job-hunting; happiness, interest and respect are amongst the factors found to be most valued; let’s take a look at the study.

The study found that 50% of UK employees are satisfied with their salaries, feeling they’re paid fairly based on efforts and achievements at work.  Despite this, almost a third at 31% say they’d be willing to take less money for their dream position elsewhere, and 37% would be open to re-evaluating salary expectations when looking for their dream job.

This raises the topic of the importance of happiness in the workplace, which we’ve covered in a number of ways previously; you could be in the best paying job in the city, but if you’re unhappy with your working environment, your job requirements or company, then it may not be worth that hefty pay-check.

In fact, the study revealed that 63% want both a sense of accomplishment at work, and a good work-life balance, 66% want to be interested in their job, and 62% want friends at work. In response to this, organisations are introducing schemes and options away from salary for employees:

17% of organisations are introducing flexible working, and 14% offer early Friday-finishes - both of which can contribute to achieving a good work-life balance. Other incentives like additional holiday days, sabbaticals, work social outings and engaging, dynamic workspaces.
