First-aid is undoubtedly an important skill to possess; in fact, of those activities which sit apart from regular office duties it is perhaps the most vital, and not purely down to the legalities. While companies are legally required to ensure that appropriate first-aid arrangements are made in the workplace, there is plenty of reason to invest some attention in this area aside from any potential legal ramifications.

First and foremost, first-aid exists to treat injuries and prevent tragedy, and this should always be your top priority. By ensuring that those in the office know how to respond in the case of an injury or illness you can substantially reduce the risk of any major complications. Don’t expect miracles, and always contact a medical professional if serious issues should arise, but often something as simple as knowing how to properly administer CPR could save a life.

The training process itself can also work wonders for your company by promoting teambuilding in an engaging and novel scenario, bringing your workforce together on a more personal level. Positive relationships in the office have been proven to positively impact upon happiness, wellbeing, productivity and staff retention, so this facet should not be overlooked.

Having proper first-aid practices in place can also be a merit in terms of the public’s perception of your company and your overall reputation if visitors are witness to any administered medical interventions. Obviously this is far from a main concern when implementing first-aid procedures, but it should nonetheless be taken into account. While none of us hope to see anyone in urgent need of first-aid, as it tends to mean something has gone wrong at their expense, visual interventions of this nature will foster a positive perception of your company and, due to the viral nature of today’s online communications, there is a very real possibility of the news spreading far and wide.

Of course the health of those on your business premises is the primary concern, and that alone should be enough to motivate you to ensure that proper procedures are in place to deal with any and all eventualities, but these added little benefits are definitely worthy of consideration. Now, if you haven’t already, get that first-aid training underway!
