When completed, the site on Cyrus Way, Hampton will be home to an impressive three-storey building comprised of around 4,680 square-metres of office space and parking for up to 340 vehicles. The construction work itself is being carried out by Bowmer & Kirkland and will create approximately 120 jobs over the course of the project.

The finished headquarter offices will accommodate a total of 350 staff employed by British Sugar and its associated businesses, which include ABF, ABF Ingredients, AB sugar, and AB Mauri.

Paul Kenward, managing director of British Sugar, commented following the ceremony, “This is a tremendously exciting moment. British Sugar is an iconic company and the new offices will be fit for an iconic business.”

Conservative Councillor Janet Goodwin also complemented the development, saying in a statement, “I’m delighted to welcome British Sugar to the ward. It brings a lot of jobs to the area, which will benefit other nearby businesses.”

According to Bill Eley, the project manager working on behalf of Bowmer & Kirkland, special measures had to be taken during the laying of the foundation due to the site’s previous function as a quarry. He stated, “The site used to be a quarry so we had to be sure we had the right foundation strategy, which has involved driving a number of eight to 10 metre concrete pillars into the ground.”

The development is expected to be completed within a timescale of 58 weeks, at which point staff members will begin the move to the new premises. Following the move, the former offices of British Sugar located off Oundle Road, also in Peterborough, will be demolished to make way for the construction of 70 homes and a supermarket development, although planning permission for this latter project has yet to be formally approved.
