Previously on 1850 Thoughts, we’ve looked at some desk accessories which will increase comfort when at work, like ergonomic keyboards and seat cushions, but we’ve not looked at accessories to boost productivity or simply make things easier. Here are a few options to add to your desk, from techy gadgets to useful bits of stationery…

Tech Accessories

If you’re working on a laptop at work (as opposed to a desktop computer), it’s important to ensure your posture isn’t damaging to your comfort – going back to comfort accessories, a good laptop stand will allow you to prop up your device to a suitable height and position, reducing the change of your slumping in your chair which could lead to back pain after a long period of time.

There’s a range of styles available at reasonable prices, so purchase or request one if you’re device of choice is a laptop.

If you’re again using a portable device like a laptop or tablet, you may need extra USB ports than you’re provided with. Consider getting yourself a multiple USB port to allow you to charge devices or add extra ones, likely making life easier when retrieving files or documents.

A cord organiser like this Gorilla Baby will maintain your desks’ tidiness and reduce the chance of frustrating and potentially dangerous tangles. Read our thoughts on the importance of hiding the wires at work here.

Organisation tools

Depending on your working preferences, a to-do list may be helpful to you. Setting reminders on your phone or laptop may work, but many prefer the traditional pen-and-paper method.

Visual workers who like to write notes may use plain notebooks, but dedicated ‘to-do’ list pads can be really great for organisation, being eye-catching and having less chance of getting lost amongst other paperwork. Keeping a separate visual to-do list can really keep you on track and productive.

If you’ve got some wall space to work with, how about a pin board or whiteboard to set your to-do list apart from everything else and really keep you on track? Whiteboard paint is even cooler…more on that here.

Personal touches

While your desk is your workspace, it can be nice to bring your personality to it to really make it feel yours. Bring in your favourite mug from home to enjoy your coffee with if you don’t fancy the boring plain and/or branded ones your company provides.

Stay hydrated with a good water bottle too, something sleek looking and techy in some way will really motivate you to drink water; think those ones that filter the water, or keep cold drinks cool and hot drinks hot.

With personal touches like mugs or trinkets, and any of the mentioned accessories it’s important to avoid clutter and ensure they are necessary additions to your desk to still allow the space to be a productive one.
